I’m pleased to announce a great lineup for this summer’s event which will be held at 18:30 on Thursday the 11th of July. We’re very thankful to Google for once again hosting us at their Old Street Campus. We’re lucky to have five great speakers this time so we’ll try to kick off promptly. Please be on time.

The evening’s agenda.

Noah Veltman will start us off talking about his SF Placenames project.

Savio Dimatteo will take us through some of Nestoria’s geocoding challenges.

Relatedly, Michael Tandy will talk to us about falsehoods programmers believe about addresses.

Someone from the MapsData team will be showing off their service.

And we’ll close with what is sure to be an impressive demo from the ViziCities team.

Many thanks to all the speakers.

As per long standing #geomob tradition the talks will be followed by a visit to a local pub where the geobeers will generously be provided by sponsors OpenCage Data and knowwhere consulting.

As always, if you can join us please sign up via the Lanyrd page for the event so we can get an estimate of numbers. You’ll also find a map to the venue on that page.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the 11th.

Finally, due to all the action around #maptember, our autumn event won’t be until October. More details to follow here and via our twitter feed (you do follow us, right?). If you would like to speak or if you know of anyone who should speak, please get in touch.

Welcome OpenCage Data as new #geomob sponsor

Fellow geomobsters,

I’m delighted to announce our new sponsor OpenCage Data.

OpenCage helps organisations make use of OpenStreetMap data by providing a simple and affordable data extraction service. In their own words “OpenStreetMap data when you want it, in the format you want it”. If you want to avoid the yak-shaving involved in ongoing data extraction give OpenCage a try.

This week we’ll be posting the lineup for our next event which will be on 11th of July at 18:30 at Google’s Old Street Campus. Please register on the event page on Lanyrd so we can get a sense of the numbers. We look forward to seeing everyone there, the post-talk geobeers will be on OpenCage Data and our other sponsor knowwhere consulting.

Date set for July #geomob

Fellow geomobsters,

We’re just two and a half weeks from our next meeting on the 25th, but it’s never too early to start plotting a future #geomob. As such we’ve set he date and location for summer event: on July 11th at 18:30 we’ll be back at Google’s east London Campus. Please sign up on Lanyrd if you will be attending. Many thanks to the good folks at Google for hosting us once again.

The first speaker has already been found, but we’re hard on the hunt for more. Please let us know if you have something interesting to present or if you’d like to recommend someone else.

We look forward to seeing everyone in two weeks at UCL, and then again in July.

Spring #geomob - 25th of April at UCL

Fellow geomobbsters,

many thanks for the strong turn out at our February event. A good time was had by all.

The pace of geoinnovation remains relentless and as such we turn our attention to our next event. At 18:30 on Thursday the 25th of April we’ll be back at UCL, this time in the Chadwick Lecture Theatre (in Basement of the Chadwick building - we’ll post signs).

As always many thanks to UCL for hosting us, and to our sponsors who make the whole thing possible. So that we can get a handle on numbers please sign up on the Lanyrd page for the event, where you can also find a map.

Our speaker line up is looking very good, <strike>nevertheless we may be able to squeeze in one more</strike>. (Edit: we’re now full for this event, but please let us know if you’d like to speak in the future) If anyone is interested (or have an interest in speaking at future geomobs) please get in touch - the easiest way is by pinging us on twitter.

We look forward to hearing from the following speakers:

Brendan Gill of OpenSignal

I hope you will agree it looks like a promising lineup. Please arrive promptly. As per long standing #geomob tradition the talks will be followed by discussion and geobeers at a nearby pub.

I am look forward to toasting you all with geobeers on April 25th.

First #geomob of 2013 - 7 Feb at the BCS

Happy New Year geomobbsters!

We have several announcements to make as we kick of the 2013 #geomob season.

First of all we’re very pleased to announce that the Association for Geographic Information (more commenly known as “the AGI”), is joining us as an ongoing promotional sponsor. We look forward to welcoming AGI members at all future #geomob events.

Continueing on the theme of sponsorship we have more good news, November’s sponsor Knowwhere consulting is returning to help us with our February event. Along with permanent sponsor Lokku Ltd, makers of property search engine Nestoria, we now have a solid basis to ensure #geomob remains an informative and enjoyable (and thirst quenching!) event.

Of course the final piece in the sponsorship puzzle is our locaiton sponsors who donate their facilities. Our first event of 2013 will take place on Thurday the 7th of Februray at 18:30 and we’re very fortunate to be invited back to the British Computing Society’s excellent facilities near Covent Garden (The Davidson Building, 5 Southampton Street London, WC2E 7HA to be precise).

Our agenda for the evening features

Simon Willison, founder of Lanyrd

Chris Connell, creator of Mixer

Stuart Grant of geo.me

Dan Karran speaking about Bomb Sight

and we hope to add one or possibly even two more speakers to the list as wel (all speaker suggestions, for this event or future events are always gladly received). All of which will be followed by traditional #geobeers and informal discussion at a nearby pub. Please sign up on the Lanyrd page for the evening so we can get a sense of numbers, and please arrive on time as we will kick off promptly.

A final note for those who just can’t wait until February to get your geofix: WhereCampEU is happening in Rome onthe 18th and 19th of January. Closer to home, the OSM London pub meetup series kicks off this Thurday evening (10th of Jan).

We look forward to seeing all of you on the 7th of Feb at 18:30.

Please arrive on time so we can kick things off on schedule. As always each speaker will have 10-15 minutes to present followed by 2-3 questions from the audience. Please note we are in a different room and building that we have been in in the past, so leave enough time to find it.
many thanks to speakers, attendees, and our hosts, Google, for another good #geomob a few weeks back. Such is the relentless pace of innovation in the location based services space though, that we don’t have time to dwell on past events, we turn our attention to the future.

Our Q4 event will be taking place on Thursday the 22nd of November at 6:30pm. Our good friends at UCL have been gracious enough to host us once again, for which we’re very grateful. This time we’ll be in the Roberts Building, room 508. As always, please sign up on Lanyrd so we can get an idea of numbers. As per long standing geomob tradition we will afterwards retire to the Jeremy Bentham pub. I’m very pleased to announce that the November event features the arrival of a new sponsor. Along with Lokku, this event’s geobeers will be co-sponsored by knowwhere consulting! A few of the speakers are already commited, but if you or your organisation would like to speak, please get in touch. We will be closing out the list shortly.

If you can’t bear the thought of waiting until November to get your geofix, fear not. On Wednesday 24th of October Google’s Old Street Campus will be hosting the all day W3G 2012 Conference. The theme of “Is Open the New Black” will know doubt appeal to many geomobbers and we hope to see you all there.

Finally, for those of you ready to write off 2012 and turn your attentions to the green pastures of 2013, we’ve already set the date (and first speaker) of the Q1 #geomob. On Thursday the 7th of February we’ll return to the BCS near Covent Garden.

Yours in geolove,

As per time honoured #geomob tradition, we will then retire to the pub - The Fox - to reflect on the talks and general geo-merriment, with the first round or two paid for our ever loyal sponsors Lokku.

Based on the Lanyrd page, it seems we will have a good turnout.

If you can’t make it next week don’t be too disappointed, more geo fun is on the way. On October 24th Google Campus will play host to the all day W3G (un)conference. The theme this year is “Is open the new black”, keynote speaker is Tom Steinberg who has been leading great work on openness in government (geo related and otherwise) over at mySociety (regular geomobbsters will recall the talk at our last event about mySociety project FixMyStreet). W3G promises to be an interesting day where paticipants can go into more depth than our #geomob format allows.

In addition, we’ll squeeze in the final #geomob of the year on Thursday the 22nd of November. A few speakers are already on the agenda, but we’re on the hunt for more. All recommendations welcome.

We look forward to seeing everyone next Thursday at 18:30.

Q32012 #geomob - 20 Sept at Google Campus / Old Street

Geomobsters,

before you all slip off on your summer holidays, we thought we’d remind you to get Thursday the 20th of September in the old diary as the date of our next #geomob.

For the last year we’ve relied on the exceptional generosity of the good folks at UCL, but this time we thought we’d mix things up a bit and head east to Silicon Roundabout. We’re very pleased to announce that our friends at Google have invited us to use the shiny new Google Campus facility.

While the venue has changed the format hasn’t. We’ll be sticking with our tried and true recipe - four or five speakers each presenting for 10-15 minutes and a few audience questions, all of which will be followed by geobeers at a nearby pub (the #geomob organisers will be diliegntly “testing” candidate pubs in the coming months to ensure we maintain our rigerous quality standards, but all suggestions are welcome).

As ever, please sign up on Lanyrd so we can get an idea on numbers. Several speakers have already commited, and the lineup is looking very strong, but further suggestions would also be gladly received.

We look forward to seeing everyone in September!

On a final note, those who can’t go months without a geo event, we invite you to check out WhereCamp Berlin which is happening this weekend.

I’m pleased to announce the line up of our next event to be held on Thursday the 17th of May. We will once again generously be hosted by our good friends at UCL, who have made a lecture theatre in the basement of the Chadwich building available for us (room B05).We will have signs up on campus guiding you to the room.

As always things will kick off at 18:30, please be on time.We ask that you register on the Lanyrd page so that we can get aa rough idea of numbers

Our lineup this time features a great set of speakers:

Longtime London geo presence Harry Wood will talk about the work of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team.

We’ll get a behind the scenes peak at the good work going at at FixMyStreet from Mark Longair.

Mark Iliffe continues the evening’s theme of using maps to make the world a much nicer place by telling us about Taarifa.

Finally we’ll close by learning of Robin Houston’s work on CarbonMap.

As per tradition, the group will then adjourn to the nearby Jeremy Bentham pub for geobeers and reflection on the evening’s talks. The whole thing is again generoudly sponsored by Lokku, makers of property search engine Nestoria. If that makes them sound like nice people, you should know they are hiring.

We look forward to seeing you at 18:30 on the 17th.

many thanks to all of you who came to the February event, it was our largest turn out yet, the talks were well received and the geobeers were tasty. There are a few photos in the twitter stream (link below).

Post-geomob is of course pre-geomob. Our next event will be Thursday May 18th. We are still finalising the venue details and the speaker list, though the speakers who have already commited ensure that this will be an event not to be missed. As ever, please sign up on the lanyrd event page so we can get an estimate of attendance. For more details as they emerge please be sure to follow us on twitter.

If any of our corporate readers would be interested in co-sponsoring along with the the good folks at Lokku, please do get in touch.

And on a final note, we are delighted to see the recent news that WhereCamp EU will be held on 28-29th April in Amsterdam. We encourage all to attend what is certain to be a worthwhile event.

We look forward to announcing more details of our May 17th event in the near future.

First of all, let us again thank our gracious hosts, University College London, who have generously allowed us to return. On the evening of Thursday, February the 16th, things will kick off at 18:30 in G07 in the Chadwick.
Ok, enough organisational chit chat, let’s move on to our lineup for the evening:

Anna Powell-Smith will discuss her work on DomesdayMap.

Bertrand Clerc and Benedikt Gross will be discussing their work on Mashing up OSM and Mental Maps.

Matt Amos of MapQuest Open will give us a peak behind their tech curtain.

As usual the format will be a very brief intro, then each speaker will present for 10-15 minutes with a few minutes for questions, and the mob will then retire to the the Jeremy Bentham for discussion and geobeers graciously subsidised by our sponsor Lokku.

One final note, if you like geomob, you may well be interested in the London Citizen Cyberscience Summit also being held at UCL on the 17th and 18th. Please check it out.
